Ok - Not the Fastest

I purchased this device to run with my OS X server. The device is attached to the server via FW 800. I've noticed that the data transfer speeds appear to be slow based on my expectations for a FW connection. Also, the device seems to lose connection on occasion - this has happened twice. Otherwise, value is high comparing the cost to other similar devices.

Thumbs Up

I have my new DROBO up and running now for over a month and I could not be happier! The setup and configuration was easy, and I like the fact that I can add or replace any HHD on the fly and not worry about losing data. Now I dont have to rely on commercial online backup any more!!

Works great

I've been using my Drobo for a couple months now and it works great. I have 4 2TB drives giving me 6.2Gigs of usable space. I suggest starting out with a minimum of 3 drives if you have a lot of data.

Good backup solution for my Mac.

I already have another 4-bay and an 8-bay Drobo. I bought this one to use as my Time Machine backup. The only problem is that you need to create volumes that will not exceed the actual available space or Time Machine will have problems. To work around that I created two 4Tb volumes. The second will not be used except as temporary scratch space, so the first will have enough. I mostly use the FW800 connection, but the USB also works well. My Drobos have been quite reliable. When I have had issues, it turned out to be problematic drives. FYI: you cannot use this with a case-sensitive HFS+ file-system as it will not format that way.

Nifty time-saver for when disaster strikes

The great strength of this device is to easily replace a failing or too-small drive used in a backup system, not for fast access to primary storage (your original, working files). I initially loaded the Drobo with older, extra HDs of various sizes, one of which proved to be unreliable after the first week. Other RAID systems would have required lots of time & effort to recover, but Drobo is simple, flexible & quick when good drives go bad, as they all will.
