Sensational ATA-100 EIDE HD
Offering capacities as large as 200 GB, the Western Digital high-performance
family of EIDE Hard Drive is equipped with an 8 MB buffer—the largest buffer
available today in a desktop EIDE hard drive, delivering data to users faster
than any hard drive in its class.
These high-performance hard drives provide a higher percentage of cache hits and significantly faster time to data than industry-standard 2 MB versions. Within the complex operations of hard drives, the buffer is used to hold the results of recent reads from the disk, and also to "pre-fetch" information that is likely to be requested in the near future. The use of an increased buffer improves the performance by reducing the number of physical accesses to the disk and allowing data to stream from the disk uninterrupted by mechanical operations.

After I kept this HDD unopened for 2 years, I installed to a new ''MediaGate'' system. Very low noise and immediate response under the remote controlled environment!!! I formatted HDD with WD software and I got about 190G. If we format w/ Windows XP, we should get around 120G.
Good valued HDD w/ dual power socket. |

Well I now know to save the HD until last when buying pc parts, I bought this drive in December 2004, finally picked up the last needed part in September 2005, and the system ran like a charm.
Until this morning, October 2, 2005
My pc is telling me hy hard drive failed smart, and its appearing unformatted when in my other system.
The drive kicked the bucket in under a month, I'm hoping it was a bad batch and the replacement wont act the same. |

This is a good all around hardrive very quiet. Only problem I had with this hardrive is that it runs hot. A medium to high end drive cooler will take care of this problem.Or a real good case cooling system.The price is very good for the ammount of GIGS you get :-) |

I bought one sometime late last year as a replacement to a 60gig that up and died one day. I also replaced the power supply at the time thinking this may be the culprit. Not five months later my 2000JB started knocking one day, badly. I was rather disappointed; glad I am a backup freak. Well, WD did a quick turn around on warranty, which is good. Problem is now the replacement is starting to turn off then on on its own, right in the middle of use. Rather annoying. If this one dies, I'll get a replacement, but I may get something else for my main drive; just tired of reinstalling every couple months. Alos, as other have pointed out, it is rather noisy, and needs a cooling fan on it. |

or partition larger than 137GB and properly support 48-bit logical block addressing,
Windows Vista , Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 are required. This
issue does not affect SCSI hard drives.
