No Linux distro, including Ubuntu, will ever install on this machine. The BIOS apparently is buggy.
So I'm just stating that here for those of you who might have been looking at getting this machine to run Linux on. Get a different brand instead.
But if you are just going to use Windows, then upgrade the RAM and it will be fine. We've used ours the past year. The only problem was one cd shredded inside the cd-drive, breaking the drive of course. But I think that was not the fault of the drive.
Oh and one other problem is the media card reader never worked, but I already had a usb card reader anyway. I like how it has both ide and sata connectors, so I could connect a 2nd fast SATA drive. Also it has a pci express slot to add a faster video card if you ever want. The processor is socket 754, not 939. So you can't upgrade the processor really. The motherboard is MS-7145 RS480 754P K8 IXP400, see www.msicomputer.com. |

Concur with other reviews, very satisfied with the T6410, fast, fantastic value. Add at least 512 MB of RAM to really step up the preformance. Hard drive is a bit loud but not obnoxious. Fast, relatively inexpensive shipping from Tigerdirect. |

Nice computer. I hesitated when I saw the eMachines name, but for $400, you can't beat what's inside. I mean you get a fast CPU, decent on-board video, a dual-layer DVD burner, ample harddrive space, and the sweet 8-in-1 media card reader. This machine is also almost completely silent!
As other reviews have stated, since the video card steals 128 MB of memory from your system, you might want to invest in another 512 MB for as little as $40. However, it's not awful by any stretch. I guess it just depends on what type things you will be running, and if you run more than a couple/few things at the same time. The keyboard that came with the system was also more standard than the one pictured, but that's not any reason at all to buy/not buy this system. Shipping was smooth and no problems at all yet with the computer (over 1 month). If you are on the fence, take the plunge! |

This computer totally met and exceeded my expectations. This is a powerful computer with great features and plows through work in half the time of my old Celeron computer. Video editing is a breeze and it multitasks like a charm! One thing I would definitely recommend is upgrading the ram to at least 1GB for more demanding applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere, which have consumed up to 900 MB on my machine combined at one time. Other than that, this is an awesome buy, beating the major retailers like Circuit City and Best Buy by over $100. For $399, you can't beat it... this is the best computer deal you'll find anywhere. Fast 3-day shipping too! Thanks Tigerdirect. :) |

Awsome machine. For technically savvy users, be forwarned - DO NOT FLASH THE BIOS. I've read that flashing the bios ruins the warranty, and XP will no longer work (it is BIOS locked).
That said, I've been using the machine for just over a month now, and it has been rock solid. Based on what I've read on the benchmarking sites, the gaming performance difference between a 3200+ and a 4000+ Athlon 64 AMD processor is negligeable. If you want to save money - this is the way to do it.
Make sure to buy another 512MB of RAM for a big performance boost, and if you play games, get a PCIe video card with a stronger ATX power supply.
Once again - you will be very happy with this purchase. |

PCI
Express - Delivering Dramatically Improved Graphics
Doubling the bandwidth of the AGP 8X graphics bus, the new PCI Express represents
the most profound change to desktop architecture in nearly a decade. PCI
Express replaces AGP, allowing much larger amounts of data to move between
the graphics card and the CPU, and will soon replace PCI expansion slots
as well. The PCI standard allows for a 32-bit bus with a maximum throughput
of 133MB/s. By contrast, PCI Express will run at 2.5GHz. PCI Express is
a two-way serial connection that carries data in packets along two pairs
of point-to-point data lines, compared to the single parallel data bus of
traditional PCI. Gamers will benefit from an incredible upgrade in video
quality with PCI Express, because it will allow for more powerful video
cards, inspiring developers to create more realistic environments that will
make games come alive with astonishingly lifelike colors and images. Video
enthusiasts will also benefit because PCI Express will accommodate higher-quality
video throughput (amount of data you can send per second). As network television
moves over to HDTV broadcasts, PCI Express positions the PC platform for
integration into the living room, while also allowing for HD video editing
and other bandwidth-intensive tasks. PCI Express is compatible with existing
PCI drivers and software operating systems and is designed to co-exist with
current PCI hardware. |
