What Are the Different Types of Monitors?

Choosing the monitor that’s right for you boils down to a three things: screen size, picture quality and cost.

Most desktop monitors today have screens ranging from 19” to 29” but larger screens of 40” to 55” are also increasingly popular. It really depends on how you’re using your computer. If it’s just for emailing and word processing, a smaller screen should be sufficient. But if you’re using your computer for designing, gaming or for viewing movies, a larger screen may be a better choice.

The bulky CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors of yesterday have largely disappeared and been replaced by lighter, better quality LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitors. The ultra-slim flat panel LCD monitors available today boast higher resolutions and are more affordable than ever, making them especially popular choices.

LED (Light-Emitting Diode) monitors are a different type of LCD monitor – the only difference is in the backlighting technology. LCD monitors use fluorescent lamps to light the display, while LED monitors use the more energy-efficient light-emitting diode technology. LED monitors use up to 40% less energy and have no mercury, making them a more environmentally friendly choice. They also help reduce eye strain, which is important if you spend a lot of time in front of your computer.

LED monitors tend to be more expensive than LCDs, and the larger the screen size, the more you’ll typically pay. But when selecting a monitor your best bet, as always, is to go with the best quality and largest size that suits your budget.

What Our Customers Have to Say:

Fast, Easy, Valuable!
"My first purchase from TigerDirect was everything I had heard it would be. Fast, easy, reliable and exceeded expectations. My monitors were delivered early, work perfectly right out of the box, easy to set-up, billing was a breeze and the products were exactly as advertised. My experiences with (other seller) are the exact opposite. I will never buy from another source again. Thank you for such a pleasant consumer experience."

Excellent Product
"Picture quality is second to none. Easy set up and height adjustment is what I was after as fits nicely in workstation. This is the 2nd Dell Monitor I have purchased and this one is much more advanced than the first but very impressed with Dell's monitors as a whole. Would definitely recommend this product to others."

Great Overall Performance
"This monitor is awesome. Great color reproduction. Great resolution estate when working with Excel. The only thing I didn't like is 720p movies seen to be stretch out when watching in full screen, but 1080p movies are fine. For gamers, there's no ghosting, blurring, or input lag, or should I said, I didn't notice any of them (I know how picky you HC gamers are :P)."
